Before and After stories

Here you will find pictures of a few of the animals that Lighthouse Animal Rescue has rescued. Some were abused, some were neglected. Some are still at Lighthouse and will be our cherished pets until they go to the Rainbow Bridge. Some have been placed in other forever homes. Isn't it amazing what a difference love can make?

This is Sandy.

She was picked up by animal control with a horribly shattered leg. Lighthouse Animal Rescue was called and Sandy was soon in my loving arms. Sandy had what I call "the dead look." She had totally given up. Nothing mattered. Her eyes said, "You can pet me or you can hit me. It really doesn't matter anymore." She was taken to the vet and had surgery done and a pin inserted in the broken bone. Due to her advanced age, the vet was not at all sure that the leg would ever heal. While she was still in a cast she came down with a severe inner ear infection. She could not stand up without falling over. She gave us quite a scare. The infection was so bad it almost took her away from us.

After a stay at the vet hospital and three rounds of antibiotics she was able to stand again. Her leg has now healed beautifully and she is a treasured member of the Lighthouse family. She has learned what love is all about. She obviously never had any before she came here.

The first picture below is Sandy's first smile, two weeks after she came to the lighthouse. A few days later she wagged her tail. Now she *expects* everyone to love her.

Next is Bunny. Bunny was born in a puppy mill. She and her litter mates got distemper when they were about five weeks old so the puppy mill owners threw them in a ditch to die. Bunny was found, barely alive, on top of a pile of dead puppies. She was brought to Lighthouse and has become the most spoiled baby in the shelter. She has a forever home here at the Lighthouse as my husband has fallen head over heels in love with her. She is brain damaged, has only peripheral vision, and a spinal deformity but she is a very happy little girl. She is three years old now and she runs and plays with all the other babies here. Her favorite pastime is a rousing game of tug-o-war with her best friend BudBud.

Next comes Lady. Lady was taken from a man who abused and neglected her. She was terribly thin and her beautiful fur had been shorn off with scissors. She had given up hope of ever being treated kindly. She would not even raise her head when we spoke to her. She is now in a very loving home and lives the life of a queen.

When Max came to Lighthouse, he was an unhappy mess. He was found locked in a small bathroom. His owner had decided to go on vacation and leave him alone. He was knee deep in his own waste, infested with fleas, and had a terrible case of mange. He was terrified when animal control brought him out of the dark bathroom into the sunlight. Now he's a healthy, happy, VERY furry guy, and he got a great home.

These are his before pictures.

Finally, there is Spanky. Spanky was five months old when someone poured something flammable on him and set him on fire. He was burned all the way to bone and muscle on his back and his ears were burned off. The skin above his eyes was not burned as badly but it was enough to scar the area above the eyes so that it pulled his eyelids back somewhat. I am only showing one of his before pictures on this page. The others are very graphic and horrifying. If you wish, you can view them by going to Spanky's full story.

Below are before and after pictures. He is now a very loving member of the Lighthouse family and prefers playing with the dogs instead of the other cats.
