The American Eskimo dog is a member of the "non-sporting" group, accepted for American Kennel Club registration in November of 1994. They are white, or white with biscuit cream, and are a compact, small to medium sized, muscular dog. The coat consists of a short, thick undercoat with longer guard hairs forming the outer coat. The coat stands out from the body, with the hair around the neck and down the chest more pronounced, forming a beautiful mane. The rump and hind legs down to the hocks are also covered with thicker, longer hair. The heavily plumed tail is carried loosely on the back. The ears are erect and triangular shaped. The lips, nose and eye rims should be black. Eyes should be dark or medium brown, with an alert, intelligent expression.

There are three separate size divisions of the American Eskimo Dog. The smallest is the Toy, which is 9" to and including 12" at the shoulder; next is the Miniature, which is over 12" to and including 15"; and the largest is the Standard, which is over 15" to and including 19". Unacceptable sizes would be less than 9" or greater than 19".

The American Eskimo Dog is intelligent, loyal, and easy to train. They are friendly, although protective of the home and family. They will bark at the approach of a stranger, but it would be uncommon for one to appear aggressive or attempt to bite.
